this is by far the greatest thing ever said on television:

"No...OH NO...New Jersey is not "pretty much" New York. You are not "pretty much" New Yorkers. [Girls: "How Would You Know?!?"] Because I LIVE HERE! That's right, I live here. Yes, we're full of crap; yes, we pretended to be from out of town so we could sleep with you and leave in the morning. But you know what's even worse than that? Saying you're a New Yorker when you're not! Because THIS IS THE GREATEST CITY IN THE WORLD! You have to earn the right to call yourself a New Yorker. So, why don't you girls crawl into the open sewer pipe you call the Holland Tunnel and flush yourselves back to "pretty much" New York...because I will do a LOT to get laid, but I WILL NOT GO TO NEW JERSEY!"

revamped!

here's the new version of that photoshop project i posted last week--after successfully finishing it, i decided it wasn't good enough for me, so i started a completely new one. a lot of the same images--unfortunately minus jackson, but now including a few more people you might recognize. anyway, here it is:

as usual, click to enlarge =)

explanation.

so. this is the one recipe i can never possibly mess up, because i've made it so many times i know it by heart. are you familar with vichyssoise? if not--it's a cold potato soup. i know, i know, sounds gross--but it's actually pretty decadent. i found the recipe in a cookbook of mine a few years ago and made it a few times one summer; it's really great, thick, creamy, a little gritty (in a good way), and with fresh chives on top? be still my heart.

all of that said, the best part was always trying it while it was still hot.

i figured i'd just try keeping it hot one day, and call it potato leek soup instead. and guess what? brilliant.

so, randomly this afternoon i decided i wanted some and that i would post pictures along the way. here's how you make it:

ingredients

leeks (i usually get about 3, but if i'm making a TON of soup, i'll go for 6)
potatoes (duh--1 potato per serving is pretty standard. i used 8 this time around.)
one onion (i have never used more than one. you could try it, though)
chicken stock (or chicken bullion--you need enough to cover the potatoes when they're quartered and in the pot you're using. 6-8 cups, standard.)
about 1c. milk (whole. please.)
about 1 c. cream (the recipe i originally used insists on whipping cream, but really, whatever you have handy)
chervil (apparently unnecessary, but i never leave it out)
salt and pepper to taste

directions

follow the pictures! first, slice up those leeks into little half-inch pieces, and chop up the onion. i like this to be a one-pot dish, so i'll usually put some butter at the bottom of a big soup pot--this time i used olive oil (i'll let you know how that turns out). coat the bottom of the pan, place over medium heat, and load in the leeks and onions. cook till translucent--this is a good time to peel the potatoes and quarter them. once the leeks and onions are done, pile the potatoes in and cover with chicken stock. bring to a boil--be sure to add salt after each step, by the way (not too much, but it really brings out the flavors--and then lower to a simmer for 45 minutes. watch some tv, take a nap...hang out with your cat...whatever.

once the 45 minutes is up (this, by the way, is a good time to put some sourdough bread into the oven, with a little water sprinkled on top), turn off the heat, and either transfer the potatoy, leeky, oniony, chicken stocky mix into a blender, or use a little blender stick (which i was lucky enough to inherit with my apartment), and blend the whole thing.

leaving it here would have you end up with a really thick potato leek soup--you could probably eat it with a fork. if this is where you want to stop, by all means.

but.

if you want to REALLY kick up the awesome, here is where you add in the milk and cream. and the other stuff. which you should add even if you don't want to add the milk and cream.

the best thing is, you can eat what you've made right away--and it's great. then you can put the remaining soup in the fridge and enjoy it for lunch or a snack or whatever later, without even heating it up if you don't want to!

enjoy <3

a non kitten post! finally!

i'm pretty excited about this.

you may recall, a few days ago, i posted about something i was working on for work. well, after an entire day spent trying to figure out photoshop, i have the following to unveil:

(if you click it, it'll get bigger)

i'm hoping to use this to get my boss to let me take a class on photoshop, hopefully at RISD (which would be incredible). fingers crossed! also--the collage features four pictures of the fianz's nieces and nephews--can you find them? i'll give you a hint and reveal that there are two pictures of abby, one of kate, and one of jackson. obvs not playing favorites, since i've never actually MET kate or jackson (haha), but i was looking for pictures of normal kids just being kids and scrolling through my google reader for inspiration when i found one of abby--and i was off! my boss is actually quite concerned that carolyn or kyle will sue us for using images of their kids. fingers crossed on that one, too (that they don't, that is)...

:::edit::: also, can you find the harry potter villain? just sayin' (i got a little silly towards the end of making this thing and was running out of pictures to use when i suddenly had a breakthrough: draco malfoy! ...long day.)

hermione

i've been on a serious creative streak recently, and a serious room decorating streak always, and hermione is having none of it:

"it looks like she's hanging down over the city!" -fianz

...she's lucky she's so cute.

Lunch <3
this past weekend, the fianz and i went to see star trek with my bff, bethany. it was kind of against my will (not totally, i guess--i did drive us there), but i didn't hate it. this, coming from me, is major praise for a geeky, science-related subculture on film.

i mean, it did have its perks...

...anyway.

the point is, i'm helping one of my coworkers make up this book for a conference on bullying and harrassment, and i was tooling around the internet this morning, searching for images to put on the cover when i came across a review of the movie on a webpage about "being a hero," particularly to stop bullying. it said the following:

The hero is Captain Kirk. Here we see a man possessing wisdom and
the willingness to act regardless of the consequences. The first
example of his heroism is on the mining drill where, without
hesitation, he jumps off to do whatever he can to save Sulu. This lack
of hesitation is shown repeatedly throughout his story. Kirk’s instinct
for what’s right gives him the confidence to act. The man that comes
off as cocky is truly confident because he knows what’s right. That’s
wisdom. Barry Schwartz spoke about wisdom at TED this year.
Click
to watch it here
. It is wisdom that tells Kirk that going to a meeting to
decide what to do next isn’t going to help. Wisdom tells you that if the
right thing to do is contrary to the rules or societal norms, you do it
anyway.

kind of cool, right? and i would say, absolutely true. in fact, i've always found it difficult to watch movies where the hero (as it were) comes off as cocky to other characters, when you, the viewer, understand that he simply knows something the others do not. i suppose that could be referred to as confidence in knowing what's right. right?

i didn't exactly love the movie--but i knew i wasn't going to love it, so it was by far not a let down. i did know it was going to be better than i was thinking it would be, and it delivered there. there were a few very funny parts (mostly thanks to mr. pine and his cohort, the guy who played "bones").

and yes, he's a little bit brad pitt (who has always sort of annoyed me), but come on. this kid is adorable:

:::edit::: HOLY CRAP chris pine is the love interest in the lindsay lohan movie, just my luck. you know, the one where lohan is the luckiest girl on the planet, then loses it and trades with the unluckiest dude on the planet? please scroll up slightly to see that unlucky dude. sweet lord. i think i watched that with dillon once...
